When Danger, Failure, or Opposition Cannot Cancel What God Still Intends to Do

Some nights arrive without asking permission. Paul faced one of those nights in Acts 23—surrounded by accusations, threats, and men who had already decided that his story should end there. Everything around him seemed to be closing in, yet in the middle of that darkness, the Lord came near and, in essence, said, “Take courage. There is still a road ahead of you.” How deeply we need that word. There are moments when illness, loss, betrayal, failure, unexpected news, or circumstances beyond our control seem to claim the right to write the final line of our story. Proverbs 24 reminds us that the righteous may fall again and again, yet they rise once more—not because they are untouched by pain, but because their lives are held by a grace stronger than the fall. The night may be real. The danger may be real. The pain may be real. But none of them has the authority, on its own, to declare that everything is over.

This past Monday, I experienced something that brought that truth very close to home. While I was eating, I began to choke, and for a few moments the situation became very serious. My wife had to respond quickly and perform the necessary maneuvers to help me breathe again. Thank God, everything turned out well, although a few places in my body were left sore from the force required to help save me. And in that experience I found an image I have not been able to forget: sometimes surviving a crisis still leaves marks behind. Some rescues do not come without pain. Some seasons give us our breath back, yet leave a tender rib, a scar, a memory, or a part of the heart that still needs healing. But a mark is not the same as defeat. Paul came through many dark nights carrying evidence of the journey, yet he kept walking. Perhaps you, too, are carrying a mark from something that almost overcame you. Do not see it only as a reminder of the pain. Perhaps it is also a testimony that you are still here.

So this week, I want to invite you to look at your own story with different eyes. What was your Acts 23? What was the night when you thought you could not keep going? What happened that left a mark on you, but did not manage to stop you? Maybe it was an illness, a failure, a separation, a debt, a disappointment, a loss, or a battle no one else ever knew about. Perhaps there is still tenderness somewhere in your heart, but that does not mean God has finished His work. The night does not cancel the purpose. The fall does not cancel the purpose. Opposition does not cancel the purpose. And the enemy cannot cancel what God still intends to do. Some stories only look finished because we have not yet reached the next page. So if you are tired, wounded, or uncertain today, remember this: you may carry some marks, but as long as God is still calling you forward, keep walking—because your story isn’t over yet.
